David Milne is one of a rare breed of academics who has turned theory into commercial success. He was completing his physics doctorate at Bristol University in 1973 when Edinburgh University’s Wolfson Institute asked him to head up their microelectronics research. It was a chance to return to his home city of Edinburgh and to follow his father, an economics professor at Newcastle University, into academia. Milne seized the opportunity.
