Any family business list is subjective. You can't compare them precisely. But you can pick out some of the best - and the qualities that they share.

Since publishing this list, Edward Atkin (the central character in the feature) has sold Cannon Avent.

What he has to say about heredity and management in a family business is uncompromising:  "I would advise everybody never, ever, ever to get involved with family in business if they can avoid it."
