Recruitment MD gives advice on reference checks
by Catherine Woods - Tuesday, 8th April 2008 -
Hiring new people? Be systematic about checking their references, urges Jon Nicholson, the managing director of recruitment firm Astbury Marsden & Partners.
Nicholson admits that even recruiters sometimes overlook what is one of the most important tasks when employing staff.
He also advises companies to be thorough about reference checking. “We ask for evidence of earnings and ask them to bring in their p60,” he says. “We look for real evidence to back up their claims.”
Astbury Marsden, a firm on this year's Hot 100 list, is also thorough when interviewing candidates and takes a structured approach. Nicholson explains: “We dig deep around their motivations and get people to talk about achievements and what they’re most proud of.”
