Green funerals on the increase

Anderson Maguire managing director Dom Maguire says his funeral home has been thinking green for a long time.

“A number of years ago, we began offering merchandise like bio-degradable and wicker coffins for burial,” he says.

Now, Maguire is seeing a growing trend towards eco-funerals. He explains: “They take place in a woodland cemetery. The body is interred out there among the trees and shrubs. There’ll be a small marker on a nearby tree but otherwise it’s a very natural setting.”

Anderson Maguire has been operating for 25 years and now has six offices across Glasgow. It recently became a member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes. “This is an organisation that's based in America but is worldwide. They’re very selective about who they invite to join," Maguire says.

“Our call to membership told us it was because of our integrity and professionalism. It’s recognition by our fairly eminent peers in the funeral service that they consider our firm to be the crème de la crème.”
