The market makers
The growth in regulation of financial markets has been absolutely crucial for Markit’s growth. It came into being in the times of Enron and Sarbanes-Oxley – times of near-hysterical demand for increased scrutiny of the financial assets of companies. The tide of regulation has not ebbed. Europe has just introduced a massive framework around MiFID. The chorus of the regulators is always the same: greater transparency and independent information is required. And who can provide that transparency? Markit, of course.
There’s another consequence of transparency. It makes it harder for the banks to make decent margins. In order to cut costs, they outsource some of the processes and services around market making. And it makes good sense to outsource these activities to a company in which they own a bit of the equity. Advantage, Markit.
In a blink of an eye, therefore, Markit has become a mid-sized player in a global market. In every product line, it has competitors. It competes against stock exchanges in the equity markets. It competes against mighty brokers such as ICAP in the market for OTC data. In data valuation, it is up against the likes of Bloomberg and Thomson.
And there are small niche outfits taking shots at Markit. However, its unique capital and ownership structure is a powerful advantage – and there are many other banks that would bite Uggla’s hand off to get their piece of Markit. They will have to wait. “We don’t need to sell shares to fund our growth,” Uggla says.
Coping with the pace of that growth has been Uggla’s big challenge. But on a grey afternoon, as he looks down the Thames, he chuckles, saying: “Moving from 50
to 150 is a lot harder than going from 350 to 700. When you start a small company, you worry about everything – including the colour of the desks. As you get bigger, you slowly let go of the decisions that maybe aren’t so strategic."
"But I still care about the colour! Is it the right two blues? That’s because you’ve created it – you don’t like anything being wrong.”
