The science of hiring good employees
by Rebecca Burn-Callander - Wednesday, 27th February 2008
When Stockwood interviews a candidate for a job at Match, he’s not just sizing them up for the role advertised, he’s imagining them in the MD’s chair.
“I try and think beyond the job they’re going for,” says Stockwood. “I’m thinking, ‘Can they do their boss’s job’, given the right training and a bit of experience. Do they have the brains and the balls to go all the way?”
When hiring for a position at director level, Stockwood, himself, is the next rung on the ladder. “It’s strange,” he says. “But I’ve got be able to imagine them, basically, doing my job.”
Match.com is an online dating service with more than 20 million members in 37 countries worldwide. Last year’s turnover was £175m.
