Britain's fastest-growing companies in 2006 were on the stockmarket, right? And they were in IT, or maybe defence, or oil? And not making much money? Wrong, wrong and again wrong.

The fastest growing companies in the UK were irrefutably and resolutely private. Don’t believe us? The Top 10 companies in the Real Business/LDC Hot 100 grew by a staggering 249 per cent. We analysed the growth of the UK’s 10 fastest growing quoted companies for comparison (see box, right). They grew by a mere 161 per cent.
