It will be probably the most difficult moment in an entrepreneur/founder's life, but it will also be one of the most important. Not all owner-directors realise that they need to hand on to a professional manager. But they should.
As one entrepreneur who made the transition puts it: “It would have been great to ride over the sunset as chairman and chief executive officer of an important software company, but it’s just too high risk,” he says. “I would rather ride over the horizon as chief technology officer of a very large successful software company – with a large number of shares.”
